Is This What Wellness Is?

I hit the trendy wellness trifecta on Friday. I had a 40-minute sauna session at Perspire Sauna Studio, then grabbed a smoothie for breakfast and finally hit up Whole Foods for some grocery shopping.

Is this what wellness is?

Of course not. I enjoy these treats and think they can contribute to a “well” life, but by no means is this how I spend all of my days.

By comparison, Thursday I had a cup of tea on my deck as I read a nutrition book. I danced around my apartment to South African music; ate some leftover soup I made earlier in the week; walked 4 miles with a friend on an outdoor trail as I let out some much needed emotions about connecting with my biological father (I'll write about this soon); and then resisted the urge to order fried catfish when he needed a late night snack.

Those are my usual days. Taking small moments for myself, walking, and eating well. So while it might seem that wellness is doing something or going somewhere, it doesn't have to be. It's about doing what feels good for you. Having moments of gratitude, moments of peace, and moments of joy. That can come in the form of a $40 sauna session or free dancing around your living room.
