The Mangos Are Here

“The mangos are coming!” he screamed at me excitedly.

“He” was the cashier at the register at my local liquor store in DC where I was living at the time. Not a place I’d expect to see mangos while picking up a cheap bottle of swill. And there were in fact no mangos in sight.

Nonetheless, I was amused by how delighted he was that he’d just gotten the scoop that mangos were coming from India to DC.

Like him, I was a mango lover. Although I hadn’t eaten them as much as when I was younger because it was becoming harder and harder to find a really good one. A great mango it’s one of the most amazing things that you can have. When a sweet, juicy one is replaced with a tart firm thing, it’s dreadful. During the years that followed this encounter, I’d gotten so used to eating bad mangos that I finally stopped eating them.

That was until a few weeks ago. I was visiting my mom and she asked if I wanted some mango and mentioned how great these were. She said they tasted like East Indian mangoes, a variety of mango in Jamaica (that I’m sure is called something completely different in East India as well as Mexico, where these were imported from). The classification of these brought me back to my childhood. Then I tasted it. This was indeed the taste that I grew up loving.

These mangos were delicious. I wish someone had alerted me to their coming and landing in the Sprouts Atlanta. These mangos were worth yelling about.

In addition to mangos tasting great, they’re also full of nutrition*. They contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, helping to make them a superfood. A 3/4 cup serving has the following benefits:

  • 50% of your daily vitamin C

  • 8% of your daily Vitamin A

  • 8% of your daily vitamin B6.

  • 7% of your daily fiber.

  • 15% of your daily requirement of folate

  • 15% of your daily requirement of folate copper

  • 7% of your daily value of carbohydrates

If you’re in Atlanta, the mangos are here! My mom went to a Sprouts south of the city and I went to the one in the city and they were the same. I’m assuming then that all the Sprouts across the country would have the same great organic mangos.
